CARE RECOMENDATIONS FOR YOUR NEW BABY

QUARANTINE

You should place your new baby in quarantine for 30-60 days.  This means that there should be NO DIRECT CONTACT between him/her and any members of your current flock.

This process serves many useful purposes
  1. It allows your new baby to adjust to its new enviroment gradually
  2. It allows your to interact one on one with your new baby without distraction from the rest of your flock
  3. It helps to protect your baby and your flock from disease

Being in quarantine does not mean that you ignore your baby.  Interact with him/her just as you would with any other member of your flock.

When you first get home, set up his/her cage in the quarantine area. Put it fresh food (a treat mix rather then cooked or fresh food) and water.  Be sure to include a Happy Hut for him/her to sleep in.

For the first couple of hours after setting up the cage, give him/her a chance to adjust to all the changes.  Unless he/she wants attention, leave him/her alone in the room.  Always remember to introduce changes gradually.

AVIAN VET CHECK
Have the baby thoroughly checked by your avian vet.  At a minimum, we recommend the following tests:
  1. Avian CBC
  2. Comprehensive Avian Chemistry Panel
  3. Beak & Feather Virus Test (PBFD)
  4. Polyoma (PCR) Blood Test
  5. Chlamydophila (PCR) Blood Test (Chiamydia)

CAGE SIZE
The recommended MINIMUM cage size is 18" x 24" with 1/2" bar spacing.   Your baby loves to play with toys and will use every square inch of the cage to frolic and play.  The bigger the cage, the better as long as the bar spacing is no bigger than 1/2".

DIET RECOMMENDATIONS

Your baby has been weaned to a variety of quality foods.  In the morning, he/she gets his/her cooked food (Goldenfeast Bean Supreme to which we've added frozen mixed vegetables, frozen collard greens or spinach, and frozen corn).  In the afternoon, he/she gets her Birdie Bread (Tabbi's Beak-Smackin' Birdie Bread - Apple-Orange Spice mix).

He/She also had pellets (Zupreme Fruit mix for parrots and conures), Higgins Sunburst Delight (medium hookbill) seed mix, and Goldenfeast Fruit & Nuts Plus treat mix available at all times.  Sometimes, we would put in some Avian Naturals (Bubba's Mix) in place of the fruit and nut mix.  I would also give them a dish of mixed fruit and fresh vegetables a couple of times a week.
